True Crime at the Kids' Table

True Crime at the Kids' Table

For the past two years, I have almost exclusively listened to True Crime Podcasts while driving in my car. When I find other people who are also interested in these podcasts, love to tell each other some of the stories we’ve heard. Some famous, some not-so-much.

Last week, my nephew and his fiancé joined us in a shore house in Belmar, N.J.. It so happens, they are also into True Crime podcasts, so had many interesting conversations over the time we spent together.

Over the next few days several people came to visit the shore house, to spend time on the beach, or grab something to eat.

Last Thursday was the jackpot, about twelve people went out to eat at a seafood restaurant that overlooked the bay. The adults sat at one end of a very long table, while I sat at the other.

Let me clarify, I am an adult (some may argue differently) but at family gatherings I much prefer to sit and talk with my nieces and nephews and their collective partners.

Why?

At the adult table, they talk about health (both good and bad), what medications/vitamin/regiments are you on? Are you getting enough fiber? (yes, that is a topic of conversation) and politics. There are no arguments about politics, everyone is on the same page, which somehow makes it worse.

So, at the kid end-of-the-table that night (they are all in their twenties) had a nice conversation. My nephew and his fiancé said how much they enjoyed talking to me. They said when they talk with the other uncles, they ask about future plans, what goals they may have, what is their the five-year-plan? Which is great, the family has a real concern for their future.

“However,” they said, with smiles on their faces, “talking to you is different.”

Didn’t take any time for me to know what they meant.

“So,” I said, “when you talk to them, they ask what your goals and ambitions are. But, when you talk to me, I don’t ask you about your goals and ambition..”

“...I ask you ‘who do you think killed JonBenet Ramsey?’”
